Our vision at Glen Arum Farms is to supply ethically farmed, safe, premium quality produce to both local and international consumers.
About Us
Glen Arum Farms was established in 1891 in the lush Balgowan area of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Owen Kemp, successful property developer and businessman who was behind the Plantations Estate and Balmoral in the Hillcrest area, took ownership of the historic farm in 1992. Initially the farm was established as a hobby with 1000 laying hens’ eggs delivered to various markets from the back of a bakkie. On identifying a consumer market need for a superior quality egg in KwaZulu-Natal, Owen and his team set their goals to grow the farm’s hen holding and overall output to meet this demand.
Glen Arum Farms now boasts 1 million hens under its farming operation and is a key supplier of eggs to a wide range of FMCG retail groups, including large corporate brands like Checkers, Spar and Pick ‘n Pay, to name but a few. The catering and consumable foods industry expressed interest in a consistent and sustainable liquid egg supply so Owen moved to launch Elderberry in 2004, now known as EggTech. EggTech has gone on to become a major producer and supplier of a staggering 200 tons of Pasteurised Liquid Egg (PLE) every month to the South African food production and FMCG industries.
Through consistent, quality-driven supply processes, strategic management and a deep understanding of consumers’ needs, Glen Arum Farms now boasts several entities under its umbrella. The various divisions include Glen Arum Veggies, Hazelmere Farm – the pullet rearing division, Impangele and Kemell Farms that make up its laying operations. Glen Arum Farms is also home to the largest layer house in South Africa. It also has its own HACCP approved pack house as well as an independent distribution warehouse from where its fleet of over 20 trucks distribute their products nationally. The combined total egg production is an astounding 20 million dozen per annum.
